Working with Artmongers, a group which collaborates with community groups to produce artistic interventions, the 11 young people contributed six Saturday’s to complete the work.
Brighter Futures is designed to give young people the opportunity to take pride in their estates by carrying out practical improvement projects.
Brighter Futures was pioneered by Lewisham Homes’ Karen Taylor, who passed away in April. Youngsters who worked on the recent project at Pepys Estate paid tribute to Ms Taylor on 23 May with the unveiling of a plaque to mark the project’s completion.
Teenager Samson Osas spoke at the event which was attended by Lewisham Mayor Sir Steve Bullock, as well as Lewisham Homes senior managers. Lewisham Homes launched the project in March 2008 and has since attracted more than 100 youngsters to take part.
Lewisham Homes lead the Brighter Futures project working in partnership with Lewisham Council Anti-Social Behaviour Team, Evelyn Safer Neighbourhood Team, Youth Services, Community Drug Education Project and Millwall Football club.
