Lewisham Homes starts 740k programme of works to combat overcrowding

Nine family-sized properties will come available in Spring 2011, ranging in size from 3 to 7 bedrooms.

Lewisham Homes’ deconversions and extensions project started in October on a programme of works which will see nine family properties become available to Lewisham Council tenants, in early 2011. The finished properties will range in size from 3 to 7 bedrooms.

The project has been funded through the South East London Housing Partnership (SELHP) which awarded £640,000 to Lewisham Council specifically for the project. The money was then allocated by the Council to Lewisham Homes to carry out the works, which are due to finish in Spring 2011. Lewisham Homes has also ‘topped up’ the fund with £100,000 from its Capital Works budget.

Julia Cotton, Chair of Lewisham Homes, commented, “We’re very pleased to be able to take on this project thanks to funding from the SELHP and Lewisham Council. Once completed, the nine properties will provide much needed housing for larger family groups in the borough.”

Councillor Susan Wise, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Lewisham Council, said, “Family homes are in huge demand in Lewisham and we need more of them. We are always looking for ways to provide suitable accommodation for our residents - this project is a great example of a successful bid for funding, which will allow us to deliver these much needed family homes .”

The deconversions and extensions project will see some of the properties being reconverted from flats back into family-sized homes, and new extensions to others, to create additional living space and bedrooms.
