More hate crime reporting sites in Lewisham

There are now more sites than ever in Lewisham for people to report incidents of hate crime.

Published On: 05/10/2010

Hate crimeBack in March, Lewisham Council and Lewisham Borough Police relaunched the hate crime reporting system in Lewisham, with 9 voluntary and community organisations signing up.

Hate crime is the targeting of individuals, groups or communities because of who they are. It is widely recognised that hate crimes are vastly under-reported and every year thousands of people are victims of hate crime but never report it.

Because of that, victims don’t receive the support and help they need, and perpetrators are seldom challenged or prosecuted. That’s why it is so important to have community and voluntary organisations signed up as a reporting site – precisely the organisations where its service users and community members can feel comfortable reporting an incident.

Following the publicity, and engagement by both the police and council officers in the community, there are now 12 voluntary or community groups who have signed up to act as a hate crime reporting site within the borough (along with the police and Council).
