Staff trained in British Sign Language
Lewisham Homes has trained 10 staff in British Sign Language (BSL) to make our service more accessible to those hard of hearing.
Published On: 15/09/2009
Staff from our Tenancy, Rent and Customer Services teams are now more skilled to support residents with hearing problems. This is part of our approach to delivering great housing services to suit individual needs.
Caretaking Supervisor Lynne Hodges was one of the first staff members to put her new sign language skills to use. She said, “Before I did the course the most I could say to a tenant who is hard of hearing was ‘Hello’. Now I am that confident that I have requested to enrol in the Level 2 course.” Another staff member, Health & Safety Officer Mark Stallard, was able to assist Customer Services staff at Home Park Housing Office as well as a resident of Eddystone Tower who wanted some advice about safety. Kiley Marr, Lisa Parish and Marcia Belafonte, Christopher Richardson (all pictured below), and Peter Borrett, Elizabeth Ajao and Trisha Manga also passed the 15 week course which is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).
