A Bright Future for the Pepys Estate

15 May 2008

A run down ball court has a received a much needed make over as part of a new youth project called Brighter Futures.

The Brighter Futures Project was launched on the 1st March 2008 at the Riverside Youth Club in Deptford and has been running for the past 7 weeks. 10 young people from the youth club have worked every Saturday morning from 10am to 12pm with an aerosol artist to decorate the ball court. They were given a £15 gift voucher for each session they attended.

The aim of the project is for young people to work with caretakers doing small projects on their estate to help create a better environment and foster pride and ownership in them towards their estate.

The opening ceremony of the ball court was held on Saturday 10th May and many people attended to celebrate the work that had been carried out by the young people from the Riverside Youth Club.

The young people received certificates from MP Joan Ruddock who congratulated them all on their achievement. The Deputy young mayor Naz Ramadan was present to cut the ribbon and officially open the ball court.

The young people have had a very positive experience and are looking forward to working on further Brighter Futures projects.

The 10 young people that participated in the project were Keenan Henry, Sagal Nuh, Peter Musungo, Reion McFarlane, Samson Osas, Anne-Marie Osel-Abeyie, Princess Thomas, Shanice Knight-Junaid, Alex Scott and Louie Barrett.

The project is being lead by Lewisham Homes in partnership with the Riverside Youth Club, Lewisham Youth Services, Millwall Community Scheme and the Evelyn Safer Neighbourhood Team.
