Improvements to your home

Estate flats

For some time, the term Decent Homes has been used to refer to projects carried out to some properties under Lewisham Council’s Major Improvement Works programme. However Major Improvement Works and Decent Homes are not the same thing.

The funding to bring all Lewisham Homes properties up to the government's Decent Homes Standard depends on us achieving a two-star inspection result in 2009/10.

Here are some things you should know:

  • We have not yet secured funding to bring all Lewisham Homes dwellings up to the Decent Homes Standard.
  • Lewisham Council applied to central government for £145 million for that purpose.
  • Central Government will not give us this money until we prove to the Audit Commission that we are providing a “good” or two-star service to our residents.
  • We are scheduled for an Audit Commission inspection in 2009/10.
  • Once we achieve the two-star standard we will gain access to the funding and works will be programmed to start.
  • At this stage we cannot tell residents when the major works programmes that will be needed to achieve the Decent Homes Standard will start, which homes will be involved or what the works will involve. However, we will involve residents in the decision making process.
