  2. Open all the windowsto allow ventilation.
  3. Do not switch on electrical lights, smoke or use a naked flame.
  4. Do not operate the door controlled entry system from your flat
  5. Phone Transco/National Grid outside of your home on 0800 111 999 giving them all the details

Be on the safe side and never ignore a possible gas leak.

Every year Lewisham Homes is required by law to service your gas pipes and appliances and tell you about the condition of your gas supply within 28 days of your service.

This is to ensure that all tenants remain safe in their homes form faulty gas appliances. To do this we must come in to your homes, you will receive a pre-arranged appointment from us about when the servicing will take place. It is important that allow access to your home for the safety inspection to take place.

Faulty appliances can be very dangerous as they can give off carbon monoxide which can make you very ill or even cause death. By having your property gas serviced every year you can avoid a tragedy and also help to keep your gas bill down by making sure your appliances are efficient.

This is a free service and by law and as part of your tenancy agreement you are required to give us access to your property to service your gas yearly. If you are not available on the date or time we send to you, please call us on 020 8314 9490 at least 24 hours before your appointment, so that we can rearrange your appointment for you.

All our workmen carry ID. Please ask to see this before you let them into your home. If you would feel safer, we can give you a security password so that you can be sure the person at your door is from our Gas Servicing team. For a password please call 020 8314 9490.

To help us with your gas service, please do the following:

  1. Tell us before the appointment date if you do not have a gas supply.
  2. Make sure we can get to your gas meter – it should not be covered by boxing, furniture or other items.
  3. Do not use your appliances before the engineer comes or they will be too hot for him to service.
  4. Make sure any dogs are either restrained or removed from the property.
  5. If you need a repair to a gas appliance, please let us know before the service date by calling Repairs on Freephone 0800 028 2 028 and ask for the repair and gas servicing to be done on the same appointment.

If you do not make sure that you have done all of the above, the engineer may not be able to do the gas servicing and we will have to rearrange your appointment. If you miss your appointment and then miss subsequent appointments, we will seek an injunction to forcibly enter the property.

Reminder:
Morning or AM appointments are between 7am-1pm
Afternoon or PM appointments are between 12pm - 6pm

Why do I need a gas service?

Faulty gas appliances can give off poisonous carbon monoxide. This gas cannot be seen or smelt, but can kill. Faulty appliances can also cause explosions.

We therefore have a legal duty to make sure that all our appliances are checked every year by properly qualified gas engineers. Our tenants also have a duty under their ‘Conditions of tenancy’ to allow council staff in to their homes to carry out the checks.

I'm not receiving any gas, what should I do?

Check that your meter has not been switched off and that you have money on your gas meter. If your gas supply is faulty then you may have to contact your gas supplier.
