A message from the Board Chair
Welcome to Lewisham Homes’ Annual Report for 2017/18. 2018 marks my 35th year as a non-executive director in social housing, and I can say with certainty that it has been one of the most challenging the sector has ever experienced.
There can be no one in the UK who is unaffected by the tragedy of Grenfell Tower in June last year, none more so than those who lost their loved ones that night. Our hearts go out to those who lost their lives, and those whom they left behind.
The tragedy has led to a root and branch review of what we do – and what we ought to do – to ensure our residents’ homes are safe. The Hackitt report published in May set out clear guidelines around what we need to achieve: as this goes to publication, social housing providers throughout the UK await further advice from the office of the Minister for Housing, Communities and Local Government on how best to achieve this.
The government’s social housing green paper published in August proposes fundamental reform to not just how social homes are managed, but how social housing is perceived. We welcome and celebrate a renewed focus on ending the stigma associated with social housing.
The changes being proposed represent what we’ve always championed: at Lewisham Homes we strive to create homes that we can all be proud of.
This annual report looks at how we’ve set out to achieve that, with details of our performance across our services. We always welcome your feedback: it’s why every year we conduct resident surveys to make sure what you tell us influences what we do. We will continue to look at the ways that you can help us to improve, and together create thriving communities and places you as our residents are proud to call home.
