Today millions of people around the world will join the thousands of people in Houston, Texas, who will mourn the passing of George Floyd at his funeral. His horrific murder two weeks ago at the hands of the police was caught on camera and has made plain the brutality of racism. This has caused anyone with an ounce of humanity and compassion to consider what they can do to actively challenge this behaviour.
The global demonstrations of support for George Floyd and his family have been phenomenal and we hope that this represents a real catalyst for change. Members of the BAME community will know racism is a daily reality. BLACK LIVES MATTER.
We both want to send a clear message to all our staff, residents and partners that racism or discrimination in any form, at any level, will not be tolerated at Lewisham Homes. We are proud that our staff reflect the richness and diversity of the communities that we serve and this is one of our strengths. At a time when fractures and inequalities in society are impossible to ignore, unity is more important than ever.
We, along with our staff and partners in the council, support the Mayor’s pledge, and commit to championing equality and inclusivity at Lewisham Homes.
In remembrance of George Floyd, say his name. GEORGE FLOYD.
