Today (3 December) is International Day of People with Disabilities which is all about celebrating, learning and taking action on behalf of people with disabilities around the world.
The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘not all disabilities are visible’, which focuses on spreading awareness and understanding of disabilities that aren’t immediately apparent. These include mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, learning differences and cognitive dysfunctions.
This year we’re pleased to announce that as a proud supporter of the campaign we’ve signed up to the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme. The sunflower is a discreet way for people to symbolise their hidden disability and lets others know that they may need additional support.
As members of the scheme we’ll have access to resources that we can use to train our staff to be able to identify the hidden disabilities sunflower, gain a deeper understanding of hidden disabilities and learn how to approach and support residents with a hidden disability. Sunflower products will soon be available at the Evelyn community store for any residents who want to declare a hidden disability. To find out when these products will be available, please contact our community relations team.
