To celebrate International Women’s Day, we welcomed guest speaker and Board Member, Ophelia Bobori, to talk about her career over a spot of lunch. Ophelia gave advice on how to handle motherhood, the pressures of a full time career whilst finding time to squeeze in a social life.
Ophelia comments, “It’s all about the planning, goal setting and taking action, you’re going to be busy but you can make time for things, you have to.”
“It also helps to have a partner who understands and supports you and if you’re single I recommend taking a lot of vitamins! Training to become a Pharmacy Technician was difficult but worth it.”
Prior to becoming a Pharmacy Technician, Ophelia was in the legal profession for 19 years specialising in Housing and Welfare Benefits law and also working at the Lewisham Refugee and Migrants Network.
“Confidence will get you a long way, I first spoke at an event organised by Inspirational You, and was in awe of the women there, I didn’t realise people like that existed! I realised if they can speak like that, so can I.”
“You wouldn’t think twice about encouraging your children to take up new opportunities but when it comes to yourself you’re always so reserved. I was encouraged to join the Board of Directors at Lewisham Homes and had doubts about going for it. It was only when my 12 year old daughter said ‘well why wouldn’t you go for it?’ was when I applied and was offered the position.”
“What I learnt? Take risks, work hard, it pays off!”
And the final words of encouragement from Ophelia, “Master your job, be the very best you can be at what you’re doing and develop yourself. Find out what qualification you need to take you to the next step, grow and step up, always keep on the lookout for promotions in work.”
