Working closely with Lewisham Council, we participate in the National Fraud Initiative and investigate fraud – this includes investigating properties which are being unlawfully sublet or have been obtained by deception.
Recently we acted against cases of Right to Buy and housing benefit fraud. One couple who owned properties abroad and had a household income of more than £50,000 was claiming benefits they weren’t entitled to. Following investigation their housing benefit has been stopped and their case referred to the Council’s Special Investigations team.
Another couple who applied for the Right to Buy was found to be illegally subletting their property. Lewisham Homes’ officers issued a termination notice and the tenants agreed to vacate the property within one month. The Right to Buy was immediately withdrawn, and the property has now been successfully re-let.
