Education empowers people and changes lives, creating opportunity and driving equality.
In March this year, we partnered with Lewisham College and Ideal Heating to deliver a free online childminding course in the borough. The 12-week course allowed residents to gain an NCFE CACHE Level Three Award in childcare and education.
This community initiative was designed to target parents and carers of children under five years old, particularly those who are unemployed. The cost of childcare can be a common barrier to parents who want to study to get back into work. We aimed to break down that barrier with this course.
Delivered remotely, the course enabled people to learn and develop their potential in a way that didn’t interfere with their childcare needs.
We are very proud that nine of our residents gained the award in childcare and education and will be recognised at the Lewisham Homes Resident Awards.
Students were proud of their achievements and had high praise for the course.
One course attendee said: “It’s made me feel much better about myself and more confident, and it’s been a very good thing for me. I’m proud of this achievement. It’s given me the confidence to go to university.”
Another participant said: “It’s made me feel better about myself. It’s made me a better parent and more aware of how to deal with my own children.”
An additional feather in the cap for this project was also that it was nominated for the prestigious 2022 ASCP Safety & Compliance Awards.
