Following the Grenfell Tower fire on 14th June 2017, Lewisham Homes immediately took action to identify and neutralise any fire risk from cladding like the kind involved in the disaster. Three of our buildings failed government fire safety tests: the two Hatfield Close buildings, and Gerrard House, all in New Cross, SE14.
We instigated 24-hour fire safety patrols and removed the cladding that autumn. Since then, we have been working with residents to keep them safe and involved in the process of replacing the cladding with a new, safe material. We have offered financial assistance to residents faced with higher energy bills whilst the building is not clad, and with contractors United Living, have worked with the Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TRA) to explain the process to residents and involve them directly in choosing the new material.
After a series of meetings with residents, we arrived at a choice of three designs for the new terracotta cladding, and residents were able to vote to choose their favourite. The choices were as follows:
Option 1: Natural Red (darker shade) and Salmon Pastel (Lighter Shade), with Platinum Grey border
Option 2: Natural Red (darker shade), with Platinum Grey border
Option 3: Salmon Pastel (lighter shade), with Platinum Grey border
Residents of the blocks voted for their favourite design. Voting opened on Monday 25th February and closed on Friday 1st March. Staff from Lewisham Homes visited residents on Tuesday 26th to let them know about the vote, which was held at the site office with United Living Resident Liaison Officer on hand to assist.
The results were as follows:
Option 1 – 15 votes
Option 2 – 30 votes (winner)
Option 3 – 11 votes
56 residents voted in total, and the winning design was revealed in the TRA meeting on Monday 4th March. There was also a prize draw for a mystery gift, and one lucky resident won £100 worth of vouchers for a shop of their choice. Congratulations to the winning resident and thank you to all residents who took part in this process. The chosen design will now be installed on the buildings – keep an eye on our website for updates.
