On International Women’s Day, we share a round-up of what is happening throughout March in the borough to celebrate the achievements and voices of women.
Storytelling: International Women’s Day
On Tuesday 8 March, join us in a celebration of inspiring women and girls with poetry, performance, art and music. Take part in a free collage workshop, hear from Lewisham poets and view six new portraits for the first time.

Lewisham Services for Women and Girls Drop-in hosted by the Mayoresses of Lewisham
For International Women’s Day, the Mayoresses of Lewisham will be hosting a drop in afternoon spotlighting domestic, health and employment services for women and girls in Lewisham. Join us for an afternoon of conversation with incredible women’s organisations operating in Lewisham. We will also be taking donations of unopened personal care products to give to local organisations. Special thanks to our partners who will be joining us on the day: Athena (Lewisham Branch of Refuge), Marsha Phoenix Memorial Trust, WE Women, Beleve, IWKRO, Bank of Things.

SHEroes of Lewisham
SHEroes if a poetry project led by Lewisham poet Laila Sumpton. Through a series of workshops, children at Lewisham Primary Schools and local poets have been invited to learn about inspiring women from Lewisham and create their own poetic responses. The SHEroes portraits, films and poems will be unveiled for the first time at our Storytelling event before touring local Lewisham Libraries.

- Downham Library 8 March-12 March. Family poetry workshop, Saturday 12 March 11am-1pm
- Deptford Lounge from 15–19 March. Poetry workshop with Lewisham Multicultural Writers Group, Wednesday 16 March 6pm-7:30pm. Poetry workshop at Deptford Literature Festival Saturday 19 March 10:30am-12pm

Noras of Lewisham
Noras of Lewisham is a participatory public art project that honours women’s contribution to society and challenges stereotypes. Through workshops, an exhibition and interventions in public spaces Noras highlights and celebrates the extraordinary in the ordinary lives of diverse women in Lewisham.
Noras was born as the result of the artistic collaboration between artist Belén L.Yáñez and architect Cristina Villalonga.
Noras of Lewisham will be on display at the Migration Museum from 2 March until 27 March.
You can also take part in a free collage workshop at our Storytelling event on Tuesday 8 March.
May We Know Them: A local portrait project celebrating International Women’s Day
#MayWeKnowThem is a project from fabric celebrating International Women’s Day by inviting the women of Brockley and surrounding area to create a portrait of a woman who inspires them. Over 30 local women submitted portraits which will be printed as posters and displayed around the neighbourhood in the week leading up to International Women’s Day. All posters will be featured together in an exhibition at the Lewisham Art House! Part funded by the London Borough of Culture 2022 Creative Change Fund.
Lewisham Legends: International Women’s Day
In celebration of International Women’s Day, we want you to nominate an inspiring Lewisham girl or woman as part of our Lewisham Legends project.
Who has made a difference in your borough? Lewisham is proud to stand up for equality, promoting the values that are important to our community. At the heart of this are people, our Lewisham Legends past and present who have had the courage to shake things up for a positive impact.
We want you to put forward your local legends and trailblazers to be celebrated through new public murals in Spring 2022. These could be anyone from musicians and sporting stars, to Lewisham activists and your local community heroes.
