The Kelvin Grove and Eliot Bank (KGEB) Community Supermarket was officially opened yesterday (10 June) by Lewisham Deputy Mayor Cllr Brenda Dacres.
The supermarket collects surplus food and other essentials and provides them to local residents in emergency situations and on low incomes. We proudly support the supermarket which is a vital service for the local community.
The supermarket will run in the same way as the Evelyn Community Store, which we also helped to set up, while working closely with the community.
This approach differs from a foodbank, as members of the supermarket will pay £3.50 to take home around £25 worth of groceries, including food and household essentials.
A resident said: “This is a very, very good cause.”
We designed this model help prevent the stigma that some people feel when accessing free food aid, and because it helps ensure the sustainability of the supermarkets in the long term.
Using funds granted to us by Action Against Hunger, and working in partnership with Sistah Outlets and Kelvin Grove & Eliot Bank Children’s Centres, and receiving donations from the Felix Project, we have been able to support the development of this project and are delighted to see the official opening has been a success.
We’re also happy to have hosted Lewisham Deputy Mayor Cllr Brenda Dacres’s first official ribbon cutting ceremony. She said: “Thank you to everyone who has helped fund this amazing project.”
We’d like to thank Stella Headley from Sistah Outlets as well as Kim Ward and her fantastic team at Kelvin Grove Children’s Centre, for all their hard work on the supermarket so far.
In time, it is hoped that the supermarket will also be able to deliver financial and mental wellbeing services for members, as well as provide tips and information on how to grow your own food.
