This week (3 to 9 February) is National Apprenticeship Week, an annual celebration of the impact of apprenticeships on individuals, employers and the economy. At Lewisham Homes, we are committed to supporting and investing in local young people, and have trained more than 90 apprentices over the past 10 years, with many going on to earn permanent positions in the organisation.
This week we’re hearing from apprentices past and present about their experience of on-the-job training with us. We caught up with one of these, Ashley Williamson-Prehay, to find out how he’s found his apprenticeship here at Lewisham Homes.
What’s your role and how long have you been at Lewisham Homes?
I am an independent living officer for Lewisham Homes. I have been working at the organisation for over three years now. I started as an apprentice back in 2016.
What have you studied in your apprenticeship and why has it been important to you?
I have done two apprenticeships during my time at Lewisham Homes, my most recent apprenticeship that I completed was a Level 3 apprenticeship in housing practice. This course was ideal for me, and so relevant to my goals of learning more about housing and gaining a much broader understanding of the sector. It also helped me grow and become a housing professional.
What difference has doing the apprenticeship made?
It has made a big difference! I feel like I am able to help contribute more to my team in my role, due to the knowledge I gained from completing the apprenticeship.
What are you doing now?
I have started a permanent role at Lewisham Homes. I am now an independent living officer, having applied for the role during my apprenticeship.
What’s your advice to someone who’s thinking about completing an apprenticeship?
Go for it and grasp every opportunity given to you! I did not expect to come so far this soon after completing the apprenticeship. Looking back, I don’t think I would be in the role I am now if I hadn’t been on the apprenticeship course. Being an apprentice has helped my confidence build on a daily basis as I’m constantly learning new things. It’s helped me grow as an individual. Apply – it’ll change your life!
