This week (3 to 9 February) is National Apprenticeship Week, an annual celebration of the impact of apprenticeships on individuals, employers and the economy. At Lewisham Homes, we are committed to supporting and investing in local young people, and have trained more than 90 apprentices over the past 10 years, with many going on to earn permanent positions in the organisation.
This week we’re hearing from apprentices past and present about their experience of on-the-job training with us. We caught up with one of these, Grace Reid, to find out how she’s found her apprenticeship here at Lewisham Homes.
What’s your role and how long have you been at Lewisham Homes?
I have worked at Lewisham Homes for just over eight years. I first joined as an apprentice in the housing management team in 2011.
What have you studied in your apprenticeship and why has it been important to you?
When leaving school I was unsure what I wanted to do as a career, and then I came across the apprenticeship. It allowed me to still attend college like other people my age, but also learn on the job. I attended Lewisham College and got a qualification in the Chartered Institute for Housing’s housing practice Level 2.
What difference has doing the apprenticeship made?
It has made a huge difference as I have been able to develop my knowledge and skills and build myself a career from a young age. I have been very lucky to have the opportunity to work in different departments at Lewisham Homes such as garages, customer services, income, environment and housing.
What are you doing now?
I am now working as a housing team leader in the housing management team. I have completed an aspiring managers’ course and am also working towards another qualification in team leader/supervisor Level 3 from the Chartered Management Institute.
What’s your advice to someone who’s thinking about completing an apprenticeship?
My advice would be to go for it! Apprenticeships are great opportunities for people of all ages. They are great for young school leavers who are looking to start off their working life, and also for people that are considering a change in their career. You gain so much experience and knowledge during your apprenticeship journey which will set you up for your future.
