Although other places in the South have been badly hit, it looks like South-East London has avoided heavy snow. Therefore, our teams will largely be working as normal rather than clearing snow. However, safety will still be paramount – we’ll keep entrances to blocks safe on Friday and over the weekend, and avoid washing stairs down with water because of the risk of a freeze. Please do still be careful – especially on exposed stairways or slopes as there is the possibility of further snow this weekend.
If there is a significant amount of snow we’ll be suspending much of our other work to focus on safety. We thank residents for their understanding.
We are not responsible for clearing the highways – Lewisham Council will do this based on their agreed priorities (see here for more information).
Why don’t we grit in advance like they do on main roads?
Gritting in advance can work on roads because the traffic works it into the snow and ice. It’s not effective as a way of preventing snow settling on footpaths and wastes salt. However, it can sometimes help prevent rainwater freezing so we’ve done some very limited pre-gritting – mainly around our sheltered blocks, as an added precaution.
