Somerville Adventure Playground, which sits in the heart of New Cross, and adored by all is open to the public once again. To celebrate the completion of this special project over 250 guests soaked up the atmosphere at the grand opening on Saturday 24 September. The event was attended by VIP guest, former Chelsea footballer Paul Canoville. Guests enjoyed a BBQ, live performances and activities.
The Youth and Play Provision has been completely transformed after more than a year of building works providing a state of the art, open space for young people. The outside area including the famous adventure playground has been re-designed so the centre can grow their own fruit and vegetables.
The project was supported with money from the Big Lottery Fund and our Community Fund which supports projects that empower residents to make a difference in their neighbourhood.
Somerville Youth Provision provides a range of activities for young people age 12 – 19 years old giving them an opportunity to learn new skills, build friendships and gain new experiences.
The community hub will also focus on employability programmes and will provide help and guidance with job applications, CV building and interview skills. The centre also has a fully equipped IT suite, a brand new kitchen for cookery courses and an emphasis on offering creative arts, design and drama workshops for all ages and abilities.
Ainsley Forbes, Chair of Lewisham Homes Board, attended the grand opening to celebrate the opening of the new community hub.
“Somerville sits at the very heart of the community and plays an essential role in helping our residents’ access vital services.”
