The Lewisham architecture map has been commissioned by Lewisham Homes to highlight the role that social housing has played in the architecture and history of the Borough of Lewisham
On one side, you will find the map showcasing social housing buildings of architectural, historical or community importance across Lewisham. On the other side, you will find information about those buildings: their histories, their design, and the roles they have played in their communities.
We hope that you enjoy looking at the map and learning something new about some of your local social housing. Whether it’s where the Dire Straits played their first gig or where Ian Wright grew up, there’s a lot to be proud of. We are also proud to celebrate just some of the community work that has happened (and continues to happen) in and around social housing across the borough. Every day, residents volunteer their time to help others, and the positive impact is clear to see. To everyone who has volunteered in a project mentioned on this map, and to everyone we couldn’t fit in, thank you. We would also like to thank our heating contractor BSW Heating Ltd, who have financially supported this project.
Alongside the map, Lewisham Homes will be holding two events on 17 September between 10am and 2pm. These events will be part of the Open House Festival 2022, a two-week celebration of London’s housing, architecture and neighbourhoods.
The Lewisham Homes events are:
The Historic Honor Oak Estate
Come and see the original 1930s London County Council estate plans for the Honor Oak Estate, find out about the estate’s history and tour the estate itself (including the community orchard)! The event will be held at the Honor Oak Youth Club (50 Turnham Rd, London SE4 2JD). You can drop by anytime between 10am and 2pm on Saturday 17 September 2022. Find out more.
The Pink Palace and the Crossfield Estate
Come and visit the Pink Palace in the Crossfield Estate, built by London County Council in the late 1940s. You will learn about the estate’s famous residents, historically strong LGBTQ+ links and information about the buildings themselves. The event will be held at The Pink Palace on the estate (Frankham House, 50 Frankham St, London SE8 4RL). You can drop by anytime between 10am and 2pm on Saturday, 17 September 2022. Find out more.
The Eddystone Tower and the Pepys Estate
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, this event has been cancelled.
All the locations are wheelchair accessible; however, there will not be any parking available at the Pepys or Crossfield events. If you need any further information about any of the events listed above, please contact us via email: getinvolved@lewishamhomes.org.uk or via telephone: 0800 028 2028.
We hope you enjoy the map and that you can join us at one of our events on the 17th!
